Mastopexy

The purpose of this surgery is to raise and improve the shape of the breasts.

With the passage of time, thanks to gravity and the growth of the breasts during pregnancy, the breasts can actually fall, especially after the shrinkage that occurs when nursing is done.  As if that wasn’t enough, the breast tissues tend to lose their elasticity, all of which leads to sagging breasts and the medical phenomenon known as mammary ptosis.  This aspect is made worse if the breasts have also lost their volume, which is why breast augmentation surgery can be the perfect complement to a breast lift and achieve very satisfying results.  On the other hand, if you feel your breasts or areolas are too large, either or both can be reduced instead.

Who is the ideal candidate for a mastopexy (breast lift)?

The ideal candidate for this procedure are those women that, after pregnancy and nursing, find that their breasts look empty and have fallen.

Will I be able to breastfeed after this surgery?

Yes, but ideally this surgery would be done after you have made the decision not to have more children.  However, if a woman changes her mind and decides that she really does want to get pregnant, this surgery will not affect the mammary gland or her ability to produce milk, although it should be pointed out that it is possible for the breasts to fall once again after the surgery.

Planning for the surgery

During the first consultation, the size and shape of the breast will be evaluated along with one’s general state of health and skin firmness. An exploratory examination of the breast will first be done and in some cases followed up with a mammography.  Different surgical techniques will be discussed along with the size and shape that your breasts will have as well as the options and combination of procedures that will be best for you.  You should reveal your expectations openly and sincerely so that the available alternatives for any concerns can be presented to you with all the risks and limitations of each.  The type of anesthesia to be used will also be explained.

After the surgery

It is normal to experience some fatigue for a few days after breast surgery, but you will be able to return to almost normal life after just 24-48 hours.  The majority of the small annoyances can be easily controlled with a medical prescription as the breasts can be tender for two weeks.  The dressings can be removed within a few days and replaced with a special bra.  It is also normal to feel a certain burning sensation in the nipples during the first couple of weeks as well.

After the mastopexy you will be able to return to work after just a few days, depending on the amount of activity that you need to accomplish.  You will also need to avoid raising anything above your head during the first two or three weeks as well.  Initially, the scars will be pinkish but will improve steadily over the next six weeks.  Post-operative instructions will be given for each woman according to her age and situation. Please note that the breast lift will leave indistinguishable scars under your bra.
