Botulinum toxin type A

What is it?

BOTOX® is a medication (botulinum toxin type A) that relaxes the muscles where it is applied, thus preventing wrinkles from forming and making you look younger.

BOTOX® can be administered right in the doctor’s office.  It is very simple and does not require hospitalization or surgery, because it is not a surgical procedure.  In fact, you can resume your normal activities immediately after the procedure.

 How does it work?

BOTOX® is applied to the areas of the face in which wrinkles have been created by facial expressions, such as crow’s feet, the forehead and between your eyebrows which wrinkles when you are angry.  BOTOX® is the only good solution for these areas, although medical advances allow us to handle other parts of the face having similar movement-related wrinkles such as the lips, the chin and the neck.

Clearly this medication cannot substitute for a rhytidectomy (face lift).  However, young persons can have excellent results from BOTOX® because treatments delay the effects of aging and can complement other surgical procedures such as a rhytidectomy or blepharoplasty achieving some surprising results.

In addition, BOTOX® acts only upon the muscles on which it was applied so that you will not have an expressionless face and it is harmless to the rest of your body.

The effect on the muscles of the face varies from patient to patient, although it generally lasts from 4 to 6 months at which an additional application is needed.

How is BOTOX® applied?

The BOTOX® procedure is simple and fast and is performed by localized intra-muscular injections lasting only about 10 minutes in the doctor’s office.  The injections can cause a little pain, but with a topical anesthetic you can avoid even the slightest discomfort.
