Carpal Tunnel Syndrome PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr Gómez Labougle Cuitláhuac T.
This is an illness that is caused by a constant increase in pressure in an area of the hand where the median nerve is located.  In fact, in this part of the hand there is a tunnel formed of bones that you can think of as the floor and walls and a ligament that can be thought of as the roof.

This problem is aggravated by constant repetitive movements of the wrist in persons that drive long distances or work at a computer for extended time periods or persons that work with heavy equipment where the palms of the hands are consistently jarred.

This condition is characterized by hand and wrist pain and loss of strength:  patients often refer to sharps pains, objects slipping from their hands or loss of feeling in some of the fingers.

The intial treatment can include asking the patient to avoid the activities that caused the syndrome in the first place, the use of pain killers, the application of ice in the affected area in order to relieve the pain and immobilization of the hand and wrist with a splint.  If the discomfort persists, the best option is a surgical procedure to free the pressure above the nerve by cutting the roof of the tunnel that is formed by the ligament.

No overnight stay in the hospital is necessary: this procedure is strictly outpatient.
